THE ODDS
The Chiefs are pegged as three-point home favorites, making this the first time New England has not been favored in a postseason game since the 2013 AFC Championship (26-16 road loss to the Denver Broncos).

The last time the Patriots were underdogs in any game was Week 1 of the 2016 season, when Jimmy Garoppolo led them to a 23-21 road victory over the Arizona Cardinals. The last time that happened in a Tom Brady start was Week 13 in 2014 at Green Bay.

Home teams have won each of the last 10 conference championship games. The last road teams to advance to the Super Bowl were the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers in the 2012 postseason.

The Patriots defeated the Chiefs 43-40 in Week 6, but that game was played at Gillette Stadium. The Patriots have not been the same team on the road this season, going just 3-5 away from Foxboro. The Chiefs, meanwhile, are 8-1 at Arrowhead and have won 72.5 percent of their home games (37-14) since Andy Reid became head coach in 2013.

This is the Patriots’ eighth consecutive AFC title game appearance and their 13th since 2001. The Chiefs haven’t played in a conference championship since 1993. They’re vying for their first Super Bowl berth since 1969.

THE FORECAST
Early forecasts predicting a sub-zero “arctic blast” proved inaccurate. It’ll be cold in Kansas City on Sunday, but not historically so, with the latest forecast calling for a high temperature in the low 30s and a low in low 20s.

INJURY REPORT
Both teams are remarkably healthy entering this game.

New England had zero players listed on its final injury report of the week — just the third time that’s happened for any Patriots game in the last five seasons — and Kansas City had just one: linebacker Dorian O’Daniel, who was ruled out with an ankle injury.

Several other Chiefs players were removed from the injury report Friday, including running back Spencer Ware, offensive tackle Laurent Duvernay-Tardif and safety Eric Berry, indicating they’re likely to play Sunday.

PLAYERS TO WATCH
Sony Michel, Patriots running back
Controlling the clock will be important against an offense as explosive as Kansas City’s, and the numbers bode well for Michel in this game. The first-round draft pick has surpassed 100 rushing yards in five of his 13 games this season — including last week’s divisional-round win over the Los Angeles Chargers — and the Chiefs’ defense has been one of the worst in the NFL at stopping the run. Michel accounted for 102 of the Patriots’ 173 rushing yards in their first matchup with the Chiefs.

Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs quarterback
An NFL MVP front-runner, Mahomes threw for 50 touchdowns this season — joining Brady and Peyton Manning as the only QBs in league history to reach that mark — and continuously bamboozled defenses with his arsenal of no-look, left-handed and cross-field passes.

The Patriots were able to confuse the 23-year-old phenom in the first half of their Week 6 meeting, but he broke out after halftime, completing 9 of 13 passes for 188 yards and four touchdowns — including 67- and 75-yarders — over the final two quarters. Limiting those kinds of big plays will be crucial for New England on Sunday.

Julian Edelman, Patriots wide receiver
Edelman’s track record of postseason production is simply remarkable. He’s been targeted 10 or more times in each of the Patriots’ last 10 playoff games and has averaged 8.3 catches and 101.6 yards per game during that span.

Last week in the divisional round, Edelman tied his career high with 191 yards on nine catches. His primary matchup this week will be slot corner Kendall Fuller, who’s allowed 19 catches on 23 targets for 206 yards and has missed five tackles over the last three games, according to Pro Football Focus.

Tyreek Hill, Chiefs wide receiver
Stopping Hill — arguably the NFL’s fastest player and its most dangerous deep threat — will be the No. 1 priority for New England’s secondary this week. Hill led the league in deep targets (41), deep receptions (20) and receiving yards on deep passes (754) during the regular season, per PFF, and the Patriots are well aware of just how lethal he can be if he finds space in the open field.

As was the case with Mahomes, the Patriots handled Hill in the early going in Week 6 but let him run wild in the second half, with seven of his eight catches, 140 of his 142 yards and all three of his touchdowns coming in the final 31 minutes. It remains unclear exactly how the Patriots will cover Hill in this game, but it’s likely either J.C. Jackson or Stephon Gilmore will be primarily responsible for tracking the speedster.

Dont’a Hightower, Patriots linebacker
Hightower is coming off arguably his best game of the season (eight pressures vs. LA), and he played a key role in holding the Chiefs to nine first-half points in Week 6. The savvy veteran intercepted a Mahomes pass in that game after feigning a blitz and also helped force multiple incompletions by pressuring the young QB.

It’s also worth noting Hightower and the Patriots’ other linebackers won’t need to worry about covering running back Kareem Hunt this time around. Hunt, who was released early last month, is a major threat in the passing game, averaging 14.5 yards per reception this season. Replacement Damien Williams has been great as a rusher (two 100-yard efforts in the last four games) but doesn’t pack the same punch as a pass-catcher, averaging just 7.0 yards per reception this season.

Eric Berry, Chiefs safety
Berry has appeared in just two games since rupturing his Achilles against the Patriots in the 2017 season opener, but he’s expected to play Sunday after being a full participant in practice this week. Who knows whether he’ll look anything like three-time All-Pro he was before his injury, but at his peak, Berry was one of the few players in the NFL capable of singlehandedly neutralizing Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski.

Gronkowski hasn’t nearly the dominant force he had been in years past this season, so it’ll be interesting to see how Kansas City will deploy Berry if he does, in fact, suit up. Third-year pro Jordan Lucas has played well of late in his absence.

Chiefs vs Patriots

Chiefs vs Patriots: Writers predict Kansas City to win AFC Championship. The Kansas City Chiefs are taking on the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship, and our writers predict the Chiefs to come out on top. After 25 years, the Kansas City Chiefs have finally done it. They’ve finally won a playoff game at home. Last week, the Chiefs got the playoff monkey off their back by beating the Indianapolis Colts 31-13 in a game that turned all expectations upside-down.

The defense looked surprisingly good, not allowing the Colts to convert on third down all game. The offense looked like its usual self, though it slowed down in the second half. Ultimately, the Chiefs set the tone early on with a defensive stop and never looked back. Now, like Chiefs defensive end Chris Jones predicted last year, the Chiefs will be playing in the AFC Championship.

Two and a half decades of suffering have come to an end in KC, and now it’s time to look forward to a new era of Chiefs football. The Chiefs will be facing the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship for a chance to take a trip to Atlanta and play in Super Bowl 53. Because the Chiefs opened as 3-point favorites, the Patriots have taken the underdog narrative, but in reality, the Patriots are in no way the underdog.

The Patriots will be entering the game fully healthy, while the Chiefs will be without rookie linebacker Dorian O’Daniel. However, the Chiefs will likely be getting safety Eric Berry back in the lineup, who wasn’t healthy during the first matchup. Berry will provide a huge defensive boost against the Patriots. The Chiefs will also have the added benefit of linebacker Justin Houston in the lineup, who they also missed last game.

Initially, an “arctic blast” was supposed to hit Kansas City during the game, but the weather has now changed and warmed up slightly. Overall, the conditions do not favor either team, as we saw the cold did not slow down the Chiefs at all last week.

The question is, is this the end of the Patriots dynasty? Will the torch be passed from New England to Kansas City? Our writers certainly believe so, as they unanimously picked the Chiefs to win.

Drew Brooks

The Chiefs have exorcized their demons and now are looking to take the next step and make the Super Bowl. Though the Patriots are clearly one of the best teams in the AFC, their defense is ranked 31st in DVOA when on the road. Going up against the Chiefs offense that’s ranked 1st in DVOA, I like the matchup a lot. I think the Chiefs will start very well, but fade in the second half like they typically do in the playoffs. However, when it matters most Patrick Mahomes will deliver and the Chiefs will win. Chiefs 45, Patriots 38

Chantel Buchi

Although Brady had a great game last weekend, the Patriots have been horrible on the road this season. They are 3-5, with three of those being against subpar teams: the Lions, Dolphins and Titans. And yes, two of those were after their “usual bad Septembers.” I see this game being much like the previous game in Week 6 between the Chiefs and Patriots, but this time, the Chiefs will be the team winning by 3. Chiefs 31, Patriots 28

Matt Conner

The narrative on the Chiefs has changed completely in the last couple weeks, and the team is playing inspired football. The defense is no longer the pushover unit it was for 15 games. Instead they’ve found their mojo and they are instilling their will on opponents. If they can do that even for a few drives against the Patriots, the Chiefs will roll. Chiefs 33, Patriots 24

Jalon Dodson

Crazy game. Has the potential to go for either one of the highest post-season scoring games, or the Chiefs defense stepping up. Brady gets dethroned. Chiefs 35, Patriots 14

Lyle Graversen

While Tom Brady and the Patriots can never be counted out, they simply haven’t been good on the road this year with just a 3-5 record. The Chiefs will have multiple defensive starters playing that didn’t play in their first matchup and I expect Arrowhead will be rocking. Patrick Mahomes and the offense keeps rolling and the defense does enough. Chiefs 34, Patriots 27

Jacob Harris

I don’t think it’s gonna be close. The Pats had to play near perfect on the offensive side to win last time despite the Chiefs barely showing up until the 3rd quarter. They won’t be perfect this time, and KC will eat them alive. Chiefs 41, Patriots 21

Matthew Loomis

The cold is not going to affect the crowd noise, but it will affect both team’s offensive scoring abilities to some degree. Which means the score will be lower than the last three times these two teams have played each other. The defense will continue their home field dominance and help the Chiefs reach the Super Bowl! Don’t freak out when Patrick throws an early interception. He will adjust and be fine. Chiefs 28, Patriots 20

Ellen Mathis

Well, well, well, we meet our old foes the New England Patriots yet again. This is a rematch of an incredible Sunday night game that saw the game come down to a field goal with the clock at double zeros. That won’t happen again. This game is at Arrowhead. This team is on fire. New England will obviously be a tough opponent, no doubt – I would never count them out, but this feels different. The Chiefs offense is back to looking dominant with the return of Sammy Watkins. The defense is playing better each week with the help of young guys like Charvarius Ward and Jordan Lucas. The D-line is looking dominant. I believe the Chiefs will win this weekend. I believe in the Mahomes magic. Chiefs 42, Patriots 30

Grant Tuttle

I expect the score to look like a bigger win than it actually ends up being. James White will be stifled by Chiefs safeties, but Sony Michel has a solid rushing day. Unfortunately for the Patriots, Andy Reid has a trick or seven up his sleeve… On the backs of Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, the Chiefs go to the Super Bowl to face off with the Rams. Chiefs 38, Patriots 28

Farzin Vousoughian

I think this will be close and come down to the wire. Kansas City needs to minimize its mistakes, get off to a fast start and be consistent. Most importantly, Andy Reid and Bob Sutton were aggressive last week and they need to repeat that. Chiefs 38, Patriots 35

Thomas Welte

This is the closest the Chiefs have been to a Super Bowl in my lifetime. This is a big game, at Arrowhead, with the world watching. This is the matchup the players wanted. I’m plenty nervous, and no one should ever sleep on New England in the playoffs but I think momentum is on Kansas City’s side. The Chiefs bring the Lamar Hunt trophy home. Chiefs 41, Patriots 28

Mason Whitlock

This is Arrowhead’s first time hosting the AFC Championship game. The Chiefs first AFC Championship appearance since 1993. Arrowhead is going to be crazy, regardless of the weather. This is a huge advantage for the Chiefs. The Patriots played a perfect game last week, and I fully expect that to drop off on Sunday. Our offense is going to put up 35 points, hell maybe even 45. Damien Williams is going to be another huge factor on Sunday, since the Patriots struggle covering backs out of the backfield. Mahomes will be, well Mahomes. Our defense is going to show up, big time. Eric Berry will hopefully play the whole game and be the leader he is. I hate sounding overconfident, but this game could get out of hand in our favor. Chiefs win AND MAKE THE FREAKING SUPER BOWL BABY!! #LetsRoll Chiefs 42, Patriots 28

Rams vs Saints

Rams vs Saints in NFC Championship game: Live updates, score, time, TV channel, how to watch live stream online. Two of the NFL’s most prolific and innovative offenses meet Sunday in New Orleans with a spot in Super Bowl LIII on the line.

Sean McVay guided Todd Gurley, Jared Goff and the Los Angeles Rams to the NFC’s second seed behind the league’s second rated offense in terms of scoring and yards and were the Super Bowl favorites for much of the season. But they lost out on the conference’s top seed thanks to being outgunned Saints 45-35 back in Week 9 on this same field as 2-point road faves.

This time around, oddsmakers are asking bettors to lay three points with Sean Payton, Drew Brees, Michael Thomas and the Saints, who own the NFL’s third ranked scoring offense and have some gaudy numbers at home this season. We break down the best five ways to wager the NFC Championship Game.

The last time these two teams met, they put up a whopping 21 points in the opening quarter. And while we don’t expect this game is going to have the same early fireworks the last meeting had, the first quarter total seems a tad low here.  The Rams were one of the better teams at scoring in the first quarter on the road at 5.4 per contest. For their part, the Saints aren’t too shabby scoring early at home, notching 6.3 first quarter points per game.

While the Saints have a very underrated (and sometimes overlooked defense) they don’t always get off to the greatest starts. They rank dead last in opponent’s first quarter points per game at 6.6. The Rams aren’t much better in that category, allowing opposing teams to score 5.4 first quarter points per game. This game should be a little tighter than last time, but not enough to stay Under the first quarter total.

Drew Brees’ numbers at the Superdome have been incredible this season. During the regular season Brees completed 73.6 percent of his passes for 321.6 yards per game with 21 touchdowns compared to just one interception. That includes a 346 yards four touchdown, zero interception performance against the Rams in the Week 9 meeting. He followed that up with 301 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in last weekend’s Divisional Round matchup against Philadelphia.

He gets to go up against a Rams pass defense that has had its fair share of issues this season. They rank 23rd in opponent’s yards per pass and 19th in opponent’s completion percentage. Los Angeles has been stronger with Aqib Talib healthy once again and he wasn’t available back in the previous meeting. But Thomas is becoming almost uncoverable at this point.

Additionally, the Saints averaged 17.4 first half points per game at home during the regular season, while the Rams average 14.9 points per game on the road. Expect the Saints to head into the locker rooms at halftime with a slim lead.

Speaking of Thomas, he was already regarded as one of the best wide receivers in the NFL, but he is taking his game to a whole other level. Thomas hauled in a ridiculous 12 catches on 16 targets for 171 yards and a touchdown in last week’s win over the Eagles, while in the Week 9 meeting he went off for 211 yards on 11 receptions, which included a massive 72-yard touchdown reception to seal the victory for the Saints.

We mentioned the Rams secondary struggles and even with Talib in the lineup, the Rams have had problems against No. 1 wide receivers all season, allowing more than 80 yards per game to opponent’s top targets. So, even reinforcements for the Rams and a high number aren’t enough to scare us away from the Over when it comes to Thomas’ receiving yards. We expect Brees and Peyton to attack L.A. repeatedly with the best wide out weapon.

C.J. Anderson was the story of the Rams 30-22 victory over the Cowboys last week. The running back cut by the Raiders in Week 16 racked up 123 and scored twice on 15 carries. Oh, and that Gurley guy chipped in 115 yards and a score on 16 carries. Even before Anderson was a factor, the Rams ranked third yards per rush and yards per game.

The Rams ran roughshod all over a good Cowboys run defense, but the Saints is even better. New Orleans ranks first in opponent’s yards per rush, second in yards per game and third in run defense DVOA. So, it might be a little tougher sledding in this one.

On the other side of the ball, while Brees is the headline grabbed, the Saints offense is now more dependant on the running back combo of Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram than ever before. They are committed to running the football, ranking fifth in rush attempts per game. Los Angeles struggled in the regular season to stop the run, but the defensive line played much better last week, Ndamukong Suh in particular, and were able to hold Ezekiel Elliott to 47 yards on 20 carries. With both teams so committed to running the ball despite the success the defenses might have, don’t expect another 80-point shootout like before.

A big problem for the Rams in this game could be the play of Goff. The quarterback has really struggled late in the year. In five December starts he has passed for just 228.2 yards per game on 6.3 yards per attempt and 58.6 percent passing. Last week, he didn’t need to do much, going 15-28 for 186 yards. And this is not the time to slump. The Saints defense is heating up. They were one of the better teams at getting after the quarterback and were able to limit a red-hot Nick Foles to 201 yards on 18-31 passing, picking him off twice.

The one thing that can throw a wrench into the Saints’ plans is Aaron Donald. There is arguably no bigger game changer in the NFL today. The defensive tackle led the league in sacks with 20.5 He will be a problem. Enter Kamara. The Saints back had over 700 yards receiving this year and Brees will use him in the quick passing game to neutralize Donald’s interior pressure. And Kamara’s explosiveness in the backfield will be the difference in this game.

Additionally, the Saints have an edge when it comes to scoring touchdowns in the red zone, ranking fourth in the NFL. While the Rams, despite the likes of Gurley and Anderson in backfield rank just 18th.

Oh, and the Saints haven’t lost a playoff game at home in the Brees-Payton era (6-0 SU). We like them to keep that perfect record intact and cover the number as Bress and Payton finally return to the Big Game.

New Orleans Saints NFL Game

New Orleans Saints NFL Game NFC Championship Game Expert Picks. The 2019 NFC Championship Game between the New Orleans Saints and Los Angeles Rams is set to kick off on Sunday afternoon. It’s the second time this season that these teams will meet, but this time around the stakes are much higher.

The action returns to the Superdome—the site of New Orleans’ key 45-35 victory over the Rams in Week 9, a win that allowed the Saints to nab the top seed in the NFC despite both teams finishing the 2018 campaign with identical 13-3 records—with a berth in Super Bowl LIII on the line in a win-or-go-home 2019 NFL Playoff matchup.

Oddsmakers believe that the Saints will once again come away victorious, but not by as large of a margin as in the first tussle. They opened the squad as a three-point favorite as soon as the NFC Championship Game matchup was set and that line hasn’t changed at all despite the fact that the underdog Rams are drawing 59% of overall bets. That’s because the larger wagers have been on New Orleans, with 57% of the money liking the franchise to make its first Super Bowl appearance since winning it all a decade ago. The total on this game has also stood pat at 57 points, a surprisingly low number given the last showdown between these foes reached the 80-point mark. Still, with a trip to Atlanta on the line, it may not be the wisest to expect the same surge of scoring to occur in the rematch.

Will Los Angeles find a way to pull an upset in the NFC Championship Game and get back to the Super Bowl for the first time in nearly two decades, or will the Saints show that they have this opponent’s number and complete the sweep in the Superdome on Sunday? Pro handicapper Jon Price of SportsInformationTraders.com has a lean on the outcome that you will not want to miss. 2019 NFC Championship Preview: New Orleans Saints Vs. Los Angeles Rams

The Saints and Rams rivalry goes back a long way, with these teams meeting 75 times dating back to their first clash in 1967. The teams played in the same NFC West division until realignment shifted things around in 2002, but that hasn’t stopped these franchises from seeing one another often on the field in the years since. They’ve duked it out during the regular season for three straight years now and have met 10 times total since New Orleans moved to the NFC South following the 2001 campaign. The squads are deadlocked at five wins apiece since realignment, with Sunday’s matchup set to split that tie. It will be only the second postseason showdown between these former divisional rivals, with New Orleans narrowly edging out the Rams in an epic NFC Wild Card match following the 2000 season that the Saints ultimately won, 31-28.

Here are the results for every Saints-Rams game since the realignment:

Date Result
Sep 26, 2004 NO 28 – STL 25
Oct 23, 2005 STL 28 – NO 17
Nov 11, 2007 STL 37 – NO 29
Nov 15, 2009 NO 28 – STL 23
Dec 12, 2010 NO 31 – STL 13
Oct 30, 2011 STL 31 – NO 21
Dec 15, 2013 STL 27 – NO 16
Nov 27, 2016 NO 49 – LAR 21
Nov 26, 2017 LAR 26 – NO 20
Nov 4, 2018 NO 45 – LAR 35

In terms of the upcoming 2019 NFC Championship, the results from the last two years are the most telling. The Saints and Rams equally split these mid-season contests—both of which were held when each team was leading its respective division and on the way to a playoff berth— by winning at home. Los Angeles utilized a strong defensive effort in 2017 to hold New Orleans to just 20 points, which was well below their season average of 28 points per game, the fourth-highest mark in the NFL that year.

The Rams held Saints star quarterback Drew Brees to just 246 yards on 22-of-32 passing, allowing just one touchdown through the air and sacking him three times. Jared Goff, then in his second year, had a much better day despite throwing an interception, connecting on 28-of-43 passes for 354 yards and two scores. Brees wasn’t stymied again in the 2018 rematch, going off for four touchdowns and 346 yards on 25-of-36 passing. Goff wasn’t bad in Week 9 either—he threw for 391 yards and a trio of scores on 28-of-40 passing—but the LA defense wasn’t able to make enough stops to give its offense a chance to keep up.

You see just how professional he is and why he’s been doing it at such a high level for so long. I think he’s not necessarily prototypical with size, speed, strength and all that, but what he has is his professionalism and the way he approaches the game. I have so much respect for him and was able to be around him at that Pro Bowl and pick up a little bit from him. I wasn’t going to pry too deeply, but I’d ask him a few questions as far as his warm-up and things he does throughout the week. Little things here and there that he was helpful with.

One player that has been dominant against the Rams since he came into the league and could be a huge reason why New Orleans wins in Sunday’s NFC Championship is running back Alvin Kamara. The second-year back has shined in both of his career meetings with Los Angeles, racking up 169 yards rushing and three touchdowns on just 24 rushing attempts, while adding 10 catches on 11 targets for 135 yards and two more scores in the passing game.

The Rams haven’t found a way to stop him, although their own star running back has also been able to consistently move the chains against this opponent. Todd Gurley has seen action in three games against New Orleans during his four-year career and is averaging nearly 99 yards from scrimmage in that span. One problem for Gurley has been his inability to find the end zone in these contests, as he has scored just one time in those three meetings. If he can reach paydirt while continuing to make his signature big plays on Sunday, Los Angeles has a much better chance to pull an upset.

Rich Hammond highlighted a play that Kamara remarkably scored on during the Week 9 bout between the Saints and Rams:

Rams defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh said that his team’s defense will be keying in on stopping Kamara from getting outside the tackles, while making sure they don’t let Mark Ingram—the team’s change-of-pace power back—dominate in between them (via the Turf Show Times):

Going against New Orleans, we got two backs that have the ability to go downhill and go outside. (Saints RB Alvin) Kamara primarily goes outside, even though he primarily runs between the tackles. Watching the Philly game on Sunday, he pressed the ‘C’ gap really hard and got some big plays. (Saints RB Mark) Ingram’s (II) a tough runner, so he comes downhill full steam. But they put him in space as well and he makes plays. So, two elite guys that we have to respect and know where they are at at all times.

Interestingly enough, the Rams may not need to rely Gurley to produce as much in the 2019 NFC Championship Game as they have for much of the last four years, as they are now deploying a new weapon in the backfield who is making plenty of waves. The franchise signed running back C.J. Anderson at the tail end of the 2018 campaign to provide depth behind Gurley, but he’s since become arguably the hottest back in the entire league.

Since making his first appearance in Week 16, Anderson has racked up an unreal 422 yards and four touchdowns on the ground, including a 123-yard outing with a pair of scores in an NFC Divisional Round game against the Cowboys. It’s one of the most surprising and unexpected stories in the NFL this year, as Anderson was released by the Broncos in the offseason and was a non-factor during his nine-game tenure with the Panthers, getting just 24 total carries during his time with organization. He had a brief stop with the Raiders after being cut by Carolina, but ended up back in free agency after only one week with the franchise.

The Rams decided to take a chance on the 27-year-old at the end of December, using him to spell an inactive Gurley in Week 16. Anderson exploded for 167 yards in that contest against Arizona and hasn’t looked back since. He now looks poised to make his mark in LA’s biggest game in nearly two decades and believes that his lack of usage for much of the 2018 campaign will be beneficial to the Rams’ chances of winning it (via NFL.com):

I’m the freshest running back in the league. I’m not gonna say they’re still fresh, but I’m fresher than Mark, Alvin and Todd, for sure. I think it helps a lot. I’ve played over 1,000 snaps, 600-700 snaps in this league and when you get to this point of the season, you start to wave back and I’m out there flying around on practice, just being a kid, having fun. I look faster than everyone else, part of it because I’m fresh.

As fresh as Anderson may be, it won’t be easy for him or Gurley or anyone to run against a Saints rushing defense that is widely regarded as one of, if not the best in the league. New Orleans allowed just 80.2 yards per game on the ground during the 2018 regular season—0.2 behind the NFL-leading Bears—and held the defending champion Eagles to a mere 49 yards rushing in the Divisional Round. The Saints haven’t allowed a team to gain more than 112 rushing yards all season and haven’t conceded more than 75 yards to an individual rusher.

They’ll face an extremely tough test against Anderson and Gurley, but this unit seems up to the task, even with star defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins done for the year after tearing his Achilles last week. It’s the New Orleans secondary that will need to step up during these playoffs if the Saints are going to win a Super Bowl, as it was the weak point of the squad’s defense during the regular season. New Orleans allowed opposing signal-callers to average 268.9 passing yards per game, the fourth-worst mark in the NFL in 2018. The Saints did rank in the top-five for sacks with 49 on the year, but were only able to come up with 12 interceptions, a below-average number for the 2018 campaign. The secondary did show some improvement in that area in the team’s postseason-opener, with cornerback Marshon Lattimore picking off Eagles QB Nick Foles twice, including a game-sealing interception that secured a Saints berth in the NFC Championship.

One issue that the Rams face in regards to their defense is that it hasn’t excelled in any particularly notable area. The team has been average in almost all major categories, ranking near the middle of the pack in total, rushing, passing and scoring defense. That hasn’t been something difficult to overcome for them—or any of the final four teams remaining in the postseason, as all boast top-five offenses while having defenses that average out to be the No. 16 unit in the league—on the journey to the conference championship, but it could be a reason why Los Angeles’ sterling season comes to an end on Sunday.

The Saints went off for 487 yards against this group back in November, with wide receiver Michael Thomas responsible for an incredible 211 of those after hauling in 12 of his 15 targets and adding a touchdown for good measure. The star wideout is coming off another brilliant performance in the Divisional, toasting the Eagles by snagging 12 receptions on 16 targets for 171 yards and a score. The individual matchup between Thomas and Rams top cornerback Marcus Peters will be one that will likely decide which of these programs goes to Atlanta and which goes home after the final whistle blows in the 2019 NFC Championship Game.

Thomas got the best of Peters in the first round, but the veteran CB is looking forward to the rematch. Lindsey Thiry tweeted footage of Peters calling out Saints head coach Sean Payton and the rest of the team:

Only one thing seems certain in Sunday’s game and that is the noise a rowdy crowd will make in the Superdome. The Saints have one of the best home-field advantages in the NFL and now have a chance to push their string of postseason victories at their own digs to seven in a row. The Rams were able to see first-hand how much impact the fans can have on the game, something head coach Sean McVay believes will give his side an advantage in the rematch. He told USA Today the following:

I think what you can really take away is you get a chance to play that opponent but you also get a chance to feel what a tough atmosphere that is to play in. I think there’s, a lot of times, fear of the unknown and now that we kind of know what to expect with a great crowd and how that’s going to have to alter some of the things that we’ll do specific to offense and our communication — I think we can use that as a positive.

Can Los Angeles find a way to quiet the hostile crowd and come through with a huge upset on the big stage at a venue it has struggled to win in, or will New Orleans punch its ticket to Super Bowl LIII with yet another offensive explosion against a foe it scored at will on just a few months ago? Here’s Jon Price’s take on the 2019 NFC Championship Game:

Price’s Take: “There will be no shortage of excitement when the Rams and Saints go toe-to-toe in the NFC Championship, as these are two of the league’s best offenses. There’s no love lost here either, as these teams keep matching up during the regular season as well. The Saints have won both regular season matchups held at the Superdome over the last three years and haven’t lost to the Rams at the site since the team was based in St.

Louis back in 2007. Factor in that New Orleans is 6-0 at home in the playoffs since Sean Payton and Drew Brees came to town back in 2006 and you are looking at a tough squad to oust this time of year. Brees is especially strong in the playoffs—having averaged 322 yards in 14 career games and boasting a TD:INT ratio better than 3:1 in those contests—and should be a force again on Sunday. Don’t sleep on the Saints, as they are the better team and already proved they can win big against the Rams. Lay the points and watch as New Orleans gets back to the Super Bowl with a convincing victory in the NFC Championship, with the team utilizing its elite ground attack, passing game and rush defense to win by nearly a touchdown.”

The Saints reached their first conference championship game since the 2009 season by rallying to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles in a Divisional Round game. The Saints overcame a 14-0 deficit and won 20-14. The Saints have not appeared in a Super Bowl since winning Super Bowl 44 in 2010. The Saints defeated the Rams 45-35 during Week 6 of the regular season.

The Saints advanced because of their defense. After allowing two touchdowns in the first quarter, the New Orleans defense shut out the Eagles over the final three quarters. The defense held the Eagles to 201 yards passing in the game and after Eagles quarterback Nick Foles completed eight of nine passes for 113 yards and a touchdown in the first quarter, he was limited to 10-of-22 passes for 88 yards and two interceptions in the final three quarters.

The offense wasn’t sharp and quarterback Drew Brees completed 28-of-38 passes for 301 yards with two touchdowns and an interceptions. Wide receiver Michael Thomas had a huge day, catching 12 passes for 171 yards a touchdown.

The Rams, known for their flashy offense, went old-school to punish the Cowboys in their 30-22 win. Los Angeles running backs C.J. Anderson and Todd Gurley each rushed for at least 100 yards and Rams gashed the Cowboys with 273 yards on the ground, averaging 5.7 yards a carry in the game.

The Rams defense, which had been inconsistent during the regular season, produced its best performance of the season. The unit held Cowboys star running back Ezekiel Elliott to 47 yards on the ground and limited to Cowboys to 50 yards rushing. The Cowboys were able to convert just 1-of-10 third-down plays in the game.

He has played in three NFL conference championship games, making cornerback Aqib Talib the most experienced Rams player in the situation at hand.

Talib lost twice with the New England Patriots. He won once with the Denver Broncos – and went on to win a Super Bowl title.

So the Rams will be looking to Talib on Sunday when they play the New Orleans Saints in the NFC championship game at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The winner advances to play the Kansas City Chiefs or the Patriots in the Feb. 3 Super Bowl at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

“He’s our vet,” Rams safety John Johnson said of Talib, adding, “He knows everything.”

Talib, an 11th-year pro, did not play in the Rams’ 45-35 loss to the Saints at the Superdome on Nov. 4 because he was recovering from ankle surgery.

Saints quarterback Drew Brees, the NFL’s all-time passing yardage leader, torched the Rams for 346 yards passing and four touchdowns, including a game-clinching 72-yard strike to receiver Michael Thomas, who caught 12 passes for a team-record 211 yards.

Talib, 32, returned to the lineup four weeks later, and he has helped solidify a defense that neutralized the Dallas Cowboys in last week’s 30-22 divisional-round victory.

In that game, Johnson said Talib called out a play before the Cowboys executed it.

“Before they broke the huddle, he called out exactly what they were going to do and it happened,” Johnson said of a run by Dak Prescott on a fourth-and-one play in the fourth quarter.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Talib intercepted one pass this season, increasing his career total to 35. He is still looking for his first postseason interception.

But his value goes beyond his ability to pick off passes.

“There’s a guy with a ton of playoff experience,” Saints coach Sean Payton said. “He’s been in the postseason, he’s an extremely smart player.”

Neither Talib nor Rams defensive coordinator Wade Phillips indicated this week that Talib would line up against the 6-3, 212-pound Thomas, but that is the expectation. Thomas led the NFL with 125 catches and had 12 for 171 yards and a touchdown in the Saints’ 20-14 divisional-round victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.

“Anytime you’re a receiver and you got a Hall of Fame quarterback, that’s going to take you to the next level, man,” Talib said of Thomas. “Then he’s big, he’s fast, he’s got great hands, great body control.”

Cornerback Marcus Peters, who got burned by Thomas for the long touchdown in November, welcomes the help.

“We all know they are going to feed him the ball,” Peters said, adding, “We get Aqib back this time. I got an extra person out there with me.”

That could make a difference for a Rams team that in November trailed the Saints by 21 points in the second quarter before coming back to tie the score in the fourth. The Rams eventually lost, but players anticipated that they would get another shot at the Saints.

“This is what you wanted,” defensive tackle Aaron Donald said, adding, “They got us the first time and what better stage to do it now.”

Talib is not the only important Rams player the Saints did not face in November.

About a month and a half after that game, the Rams signed running back C.J. Anderson. The veteran rushed for 167 and 132 yards while star Todd Gurley was sidelined because of a left knee injury.

Last week against the Cowboys, with the help of a line that opened gaping holes, Anderson and Gurley each rushed for more than 100 yards. It marked the first time since 1997 that two backs from the same team eclipsed 100 yards in a playoff game.

The line also gave up no sacks, a performance quarterback Jared Goff would welcome Sunday.

Goff passed for 391 yards and three touchdowns, with an interception, in the first game against the Saints. He is not making any major changes for the rematch.

“Take care of the football, distribute the ball, be smart with it and win,” he said.

Bill Plaschke predicts a big win for the Rams in the NFC title game against the New Orleans Saints.

Said receiver Robert Woods: “Full confidence in Jared, full confidence in this offense, in this team. Really, no question marks should be held on this team on Sunday.”

There were questions about the Rams in December after a lackluster victory on the road against the Detroit Lions and losses to the Chicago Bears and the Eagles. But they closed the season with victories against the Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers before defeating the Cowboys and advancing to the conference championship game.

“We had a little bit of a lull there where everybody was ready to press the panic button, except for everybody” in the Rams’ organization, coach Sean McVay said.

Now they get another shot at the Saints. And a chance to advance to the Super Bowl for the first time since the 2001 season.

The formula for success is simple, according to Talib.

“Less mistakes,” he said, “is going to win the game.”

The Saints and their home fans were left shell-shocked last Sunday when the team dropped into an immediate 14-0 hole in the first quarter against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles wouldn’t score another point however, and New Orleans eventually erased the deficit and survived with a 20-14 win.Since going 5-0 SU and ATS with five straight wins by 10 points or more, the Saints are 1-5 ATS over their last six games with two losses and only one win by more than six points.

Los Angeles with just two games left in the regular season as an insurance policy for Todd Gurley. But Anderson has been a lot more than that for the Rams with 422 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns through three games including a 123 yard and two touchdown effort in last Saturday’s 30-22 win over Dallas.Gurley also had 115 yards in the win, and the Rams are on a roll with a 3-0 SU and ATS record over their last three games.

Sunday’s total is set at 56.5 points at sports betting sites. The UNDER is 6-2 in New Orleans’ last eight games.New Orleans defeated Los Angeles 45-35 at home earlier this season in an impressive blowout victory. Over their last six games, however, the Saints are averaging only 19.2 points per game. It will be interesting to see if the New Orleans offense finds its groove for another shootout in this one or if it ends up being a more physical and low-scoring affair than many are expecting it to be.

The weather outside might be frightful, with many areas of the country getting slammed by Winter Storm Harper, but Sunday’s NFC Championship Game between the and emanates from the cozy indoor confines of the Superdome. When these teams met earlier this season, the Saints won by 10 in a game that saw 80 points scored, but this time around, the home team will be without wide receiver (calf) and tight end (illness). The Saints are favored by a field goal, the same as the opening line. Meanwhile, the Over-Under has seen movement and sits at 56.5 in the latest Rams vs. Saints odds, down a half-point from where it opened. Before you lock in any Rams vs. Saints picks and predictions of your own, be sure to check out what SportsLine’s R.J. White has to say.

White again emerged as the top pro football handicapper on SportsLine this season, hitting an astounding 62 percent of his spread selections and netting $100 bettors a profit of nearly $2,000. The stats guru also cashed big last season in the world’s most prestigious sports handicapping tournament, the Westgate Las Vegas SuperContest, where he has driven deep two of the past four years.

What’s more, White has a strong record of success in handicapping these teams, the Rams in particular. He boasts an impressive 20-5 spread mark in games involving the Rams over the past two seasons.

Just last week, White advised SportsLine members that Los Angeles (-7) would have success running the ball against Dallas, which would be the difference-maker. The Rams did just that, piling up 273 yards on the ground in their eight-point victory. Anyone who followed White’s advice booked another win.
